If you feel like conversations are becoming rarer, you're not alone. A 2026 paper in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that the average person now speaks about 12,792 words a day, down from roughly 15,959 in a comparable 2007 study. Broken down by year, that works out to 300 fewer spoken words every year between 2005 and 2019. A 28% decline in just over a decade. The drop was steepest for people under 25, who lost words about 44% faster than older adults did.
Psychologists Valeria Pfeifer and Matthias Mehl connect the trend to the U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 warning about a loneliness epidemic, since how much we talk is tied to how connected we feel. Interestingly, age and technology use don't fully explain the pattern. There seems to be something bigger happening, in how society gathers and communicates, and teenagers are living right in the middle of it.
For high school educators and parents of neurodivergent teens, that raises an obvious question: what does a quieter world mean for teens who already process social communication differently?

It's Not a Simple Story of Loss

It would be easy to assume "less talking" is automatically bad news for autistic and ADHD teens, who are already more likely to find social communication effortful. The research says it's more complicated than that.
For one, a lot of neurodivergent people already gravitate toward text over speech, and not by accident. A study that passively tracked smartphone use over four months found autistic adults spent roughly 2.3 times longer on text-based communication apps than neurotypical peers did. Researchers connect this to the control, clarity, thinking time, and lower sensory load that writing offers compared to live conversation, where tone, timing, and facial expression all have to be processed in real time. It is also important to note that reduced verbal communication has previously been tied to higher social anxiety in autism. In that light, a culture drifting toward fewer spoken words and more typed ones may be drifting toward something a lot of neurodivergent people already find easier to navigate.
But it's a genuine trade-off, not a simple win. That same body of research points out that text strips out tone of voice, pacing, and facial expression. The "paralinguistic" cues that carry much of a message's real meaning, and that autistic writers often still spend real effort masking their tone in text so they aren't misread. Sarcasm, understatement, and enthusiasm are notoriously hard to convey without a voice behind them. So while fewer spoken conversations might ease some sensory and social demands, they also shrink the number of live, low-stakes chances teens get to practice reading and producing those cues. Practice that matters enormously once they're interviewing for a job, dating, or navigating a workplace where nobody sends a follow-up text explaining what they actually meant.
There's also a useful reframe from autism research called the double empathy problem, first proposed by autistic researcher Damian Milton in 2012. It argues that miscommunication between autistic and non-autistic people runs in both directions. It's not that one side is "bad" at social skills, it's that two different communication styles are colliding. One frequently cited study found that when autistic people talk with other autistic people, information gets passed along just as well as it does between non-autistic pairs, and sometimes better. It's specifically in mixed groups that more gets lost. That matters here: a quieter, more text-heavy culture doesn't create a new deficit in neurodivergent teens. But it does shrink the shared, everyday practice space where autistic and non-autistic people used to calibrate to one another, the hallway chats and lunchroom banter that Pfeifer and Mehl point to as exactly what's disappearing.

Why the Missing Practice Matters More for Some Teens

Two research threads explain why this gap lands differently for neurodivergent teens.
The first is interoception, the sense of what's happening inside your own body, like a racing heart, a tight chest, or frustration building before it shows on your face. The research here is more nuanced than popular narratives suggest: a 2025 meta-analysis of 31 studies found that objective, heart-rate-based interoceptive accuracy isn't consistently different in autistic people, and the picture for other dimensions of interoception is still unclear enough that researchers are calling for more standardized study. What is clearer is how it feels from the inside. A separate 2025 study asked autistic adolescents directly about their experience and found real links between not-quite-reading their own body signals and heightened anxiety. Interoception underpins a lot of what we casually call "reading the room," and for many neurodivergent teens, it benefits from being taught explicitly rather than assumed to develop through exposure alone.
The second is pragmatic and paralinguistic language itself. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) treats social communication as a core, diagnosable feature of autism, not a soft skill on the side, and its research summary is sobering: autistic adults transitioning out of high school face notably higher unemployment, more discontinued friendships, and greater social isolation than their peers. ADHD researchers are raising a related flag from a different angle. A Swedish team studying how the brain's language network develops through adolescence in ADHD points directly to today's phone-based socializing as a reason teens get less face-to-face conversational practice than earlier generations got. A concern that lines up almost exactly with what Pfeifer and Mehl measured, aimed at a group already shown in other research to have real differences in perspective-taking and pragmatic language.
None of this means neurodivergent teens are behind or broken. It means the ambient, absorb-it-by-osmosis path to learning paralinguistic and interoceptive skills is quietly getting narrower for everyone and for teens who process these things differently to begin with, that narrowing matters more.

What Actually Predicts Loneliness (Good News Here)

Before assuming the fix is simply "make teens talk more," it's worth sitting with a 2025 study of 241 autistic youth aged 15 to 26. Researchers looked at loneliness alongside how much time participants spent interacting versus alone, how that time felt, and how often peers included or ignored them. The clearest finding: raw time spent socializing, or alone, barely mattered. What predicted loneliness was the emotional quality of the interaction and whether a teen felt included.
That's genuinely useful for anyone supporting a neurodivergent teen. The goal isn't manufacturing more small talk for its own sake, it's making sure the interactions that do happen leave a teen feeling seen, and building the specific skills that make inclusion more likely when it counts.

Practical Tips for Educators

  • Build in low-stakes, structured speaking practice. Short partner check-ins, "two-minute conversation" warm-ups, or presenting to one peer instead of the whole class give more repetitions without an audience's pressure.
  • Teach tone and subtext out loud. Say the same sentence in a flat, sarcastic, and enthusiastic tone and ask students to name the difference. This makes an invisible skill visible.
  • Don't mistake texting or gaming-chat fluency for social withdrawal. A student who's highly active in a Discord server isn't avoiding communication, they're using a mode that works for them. Build bridges from that comfort toward spoken practice rather than treating it as something to fix.
  • Watch for exclusion, not just quietness. Since inclusion, not raw talk time, is what protects against loneliness, a quiet student who's genuinely included is in a very different position from one who's being frozen out.

Practical Tips for Parents

  • Narrate your own internal state out loud. Something as simple as "I notice my shoulders are tense, I think I'm getting frustrated" models interoceptive awareness in a low-pressure way.
  • Protect, don't police, their preferred communication mode. If text or gaming chat is where your teen feels most like themselves, that's a real relationship, not a lesser one, a starting point to build from, not something to correct.
  • Ask about quality, not quantity. "Did you feel included today?" tends to surface more than "Did you talk to anyone today?"
  • Practice scripts for the moments that still require a voice. Ordering food, a job interview, calling to reschedule an appointment, these are exactly the situations where real-time paralinguistic skill can't yet be replaced by a text.
